3 Tools/Services for Podcasting

I recently came across three companies offering tools or services for podcasting: Libsyn which provides podcast hosting and monetization, Bossjock Studio which provide software for producing podcasts and Blubrry which provides a plug-in to host your podcast on any WordPress site as well as hosting and statistics services.  I met these companies while at New Media World, which was formerly Blogworld.

Libsyn Podcast Hosting, Distribution and Monetization Libsyn stands for liberated syndication. They claim to be the world's largest postcasting hosting company, with over 10,000 shows and billions of downloads. Its a claim that easy to accept given their client list, which includes: Adam Carolla, Mark Marin, The Smodcast, Rooster Teeth, IGN and The NFL.

Started in 2004, Libsyn makes it possible to get podcasts up in itunes, because iTunes does not directly host podcasts, it only links to them.  They also help monetize podcasts by bring advertisers. They can also set-up a premium paid subscription podcasts.

All advertising is "double opt-in" where both the publisher and the advertiser says must agree.  The threshold for getting advertising is usually about 5,000 downloads per episode in the US. If you can get to that level it's worth it for advertisers to look at you. Anything lower than than does not make sense for advertisers. The service starts at $5 per month. Libsyn.com

Blubrry PowerPress Plugin for WordPress

Blubrry creates media tools for podcasting, including podcasting statistics and podcasting media hosting. It's parent company, Raw Voice makes the Power Press plugin which is a free plug-in that adds podcasting features to WordPress. This makes podcasting easy and accessible, while leveraging the power of the WordPress platform. The plugin support 6 audio and 3 video media players, multiple media formats, media URL verification and migration tools.

It also generates XML in a format required for podcasting – which is an extended version of RSS2 for the feeds to be iTunes-compliant. While the plugin is free and open source, the statistics service starts at $5/month and podcast hosting starts at 12/month.  They also provide a free Podcasting Manual to help get you started. Blubrry.com

Bossjock Studio for Podcasting

Bossjock Studio brings professional podcasting to iOS – iPhone and iPad – with no PC needed. It's a podcast studio with everything you need to do podcasting in realtime. One of their customers said using the software was "like performing a podcast." So you load up your virtual carts with intro, outro, background music, listener feedback and more – up-to 35 carts, which can duck and fade behind the mic audio for dynamic sounds and smooth fading.

It's all recorded in realtime and is output to finished quality. It comes out sounding broadcast ready: loud, mastered and compressed. It outputs to major audio formats, including, mp3, m4a, wav or aiff.

When finished you can send your recording to your podcast host, Soundcloud, Dropbox, iTunes and other services. This makes it possible to recorde finished quality work in a single take without post production. There are even ways to use it for live-streaming.  The software now supports audio bus, so the app can output in real time to another audio app such as Garage Band.

You can create a variety of rigs around it – with support for external mixers and mics, including Apogee Mic, IK Multimedia, iRig, Mic Cast and Blue Mikey.

I was very impressed with the power and flexibility of this tool and expect to use it some time soon. The iOS app costs $9.99 and is available in the Apple App Store. Bossjockstudio.com

Seeing is believing, so check-out some of the Bossjock Studio capabilities with this recent video they posted about new audio bus features.

  1. With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation?
My website has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any solutions to help stop content from being stolen? I’d certainly appreciate it.
